Jose Luis De Juan is an artist residing in Pasadena, CA. He is originally from Madrid, Spain where he studied at the Madrid Academy of Art and graduated in Graphic Design. He then obtained a scholarship from the European Union to go into broadcast design and moved to California where he has lived for the past 12 years, pursuing a career in 3D motion graphics. Jose has worked with several animation studios in and around Los Angeles.
He spends every minute of his time following his passion for painting. He is an ardent plein-air artist and finds constant inspiration in the city and its surroundings. He works in both oil and watercolor to capture the light.
Jose thinks learning lasts forever, and then some…. He has taken classes and workshops at the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art in the Art Center of Pasadena and at the Scottsdale Artist’s School with such luminaries as Andrew Peters, Jennifer McChristian, Clayton Beck III and Sherri McGraw.
Although most of his paintings are of landscapes he also paints figurative works and portraits. Jose's appreciation for the human body as artistic subject, and specially, the angular and sensual masculine form, is evident in his nude studies. His nudes are neither an excuse for mere artistic practice nor simply a vehicle for sensual complacency. For him the male beauty is a worthy subject itself, imbued with both spiritual and erotic qualities.
Eroticism is a state of the mind and a longing of the spirit. Explicit images tend to distract from the inner narrative and the painterly qualities of the work so, Jose rarely uses direct sexual depictions but, rather a more subdued, even melancholic depiction of Eros.
Jose has exhibited in several galleries and has won several watercolor and oil painting awards.
Jose Luis De Juan lives in Pasadena, CA with life partner Armando Ortiz, a teacher and art collector – on a budget.
