Born in Aleppo, Syria, in 1956, Zareh Meguerditchian began to draw at a very young age. Of Armenian descent, his family history, his education and psychology were marked by the tragic massacres of 1915 Armenian genocide.

In 1963, he moved with his family to Lebanon where they witnessed the atrocities of that country’s civil war during the 70’s. It was a time of violence and a total breakdown of tolerance and civility between the quarreling communities. Living through it had a profound effect on the sensitive young artist who was studying fine art, at the time, at Al Kaslik University, Beirut.

Those years of war would start to define the core concerns and attributes of his art, expressed at turns through sorrow, apprehension, and explosive outrage at manifestations of social and political injustice. Much of his art is an expression of pain and fears from the past and his hopes for the future. It is also a way of eternalizing the memory of the victims of the genocide and of war.

After moving to the United States in 1983, Zareh has dedicated himself to drawing, painting, and performance pieces, with much of his output designed to raise public awareness of universal issues such as environmental degradation, globalism and its dire consequences for disenfranchised societies, and human-rights violations including genocide. He pursued further studies at UCLA and at Barnsdall Art Center in Los Angeles in the late 80’s.

His exhibitions, such as “The Red Trees of the Armenian Genocide” and “Marry the Priest,” have been featured in the Los Angeles Times, La Opinion, KTLA, and others
