My favorite subjects are people, and not surprisingly I have an affinity for forms resembling human anatomy. I find them aplenty in nature among contorted trees, water-worn beach rocks, fleeting clouds, etc.

I like to make my subjects, even the inanimate, look alive on my canvas, as if they are full of spirit, reminiscent of living creatures. So my rocks don't just sit there, but crawl. My feeling is everything in nature has a unique liveliness.

When I paint my imaginary world, I also like to plant something unexpected, yet plausible, so a viewer will see something new every time. I hope my art will entertain the mind as well as the eyes.

Who knows, the way I see and express nature might be rooted in my childhood memory of witnessing shamanistic rituals in Korea. Although my memories are now faded, the ancient idea of spirits, residing in rocks or trees still remains with me. Whatever the reason, I like to respect and appreciate things in nature, even the weather-beaten rocks.

You might say my paintings are surrealistic with a shamanistic undertone.

My collage works are a continuation of my Beach Rock painting series, which were originally inspired by beach rocks I saw in Carlsbad, California. The partially submerged wet and weird rocks REMINDED ME OF some strange creatures. I imagined them to be alive with full spirits.

Initially, I applied the collage sparingly on the painted rocks to make my painting more intriguing. Then I wanted to paint with collage completely. Bits and pieces of photographic images became my brush strokes filling the scene.

The results are these surrealistic beach/ocean scenes, done in a painterly manner.

Using someone else's photos in my collage has expanded the boundary of my imagination and given me new artistic expression. Collage is also meaningful to me, because it lets me repurpose wonderful magazine and newspaper photos, instead of turning them into refuse.
