Viktor Uvarov was born in Kharkov in the Ukraine. He has recently arrived in the USA and is currently a student in Los Angeles.

As a young boy, Victor showed an exceptional talent for drawing, filling pages of his sketch - (and school) - books with drawings of phantasmagorical images drawn from his imagination. Later on, he graduated from pencils and colored crayons and began to transpose his drawings of fantasy worlds into paint on canvas. His predilection for making visual adaptations of his imagined fantasies is evident in all his work where elements of symbolism and optical effects combine to create illusions which are surreal, complex and entice the viewer to consider alternative perspectives. There are elements of surprise, unexpected juxtapositions and non sequitur. His paintings are not only expressions of his inner mind they also contain social and political messages which are relate to his past in the Ukraine and also to larger problems which confront humanity on a global scale.

Viktor’s interest in art was intensified by the wave of street and graffiti art which has evolved during the last two decades as part of the global spread of pop culture. His own style, being is perfectly adaptable for the new genre, which feeds off visual recognition, has allowed him to find a new freedom of expression for his rampant imagination. Just as his paintings serve to send a message, he has been enthused by graffiti as a way to express self-conscious cultural, social and political criticism. Graffiti art is not only a way to mark territory - it is a way to mark ideas.

Just as street art gains acceptance in the established movements of contemporary art, some street artists are returning to the studio to re-create their works in traditional forms which are more commercial.

Though adept with spray paint on a large wall, Viktor continues to work with brushes, canvas and easel. Some of his art is pretty. Some is quirky. It is almost always thought-provoking or disturbing, and some is just plain weird. But every piece has a story behind that is embedded in Victor’s sub-conscious.

His intelligent and wonderful images will excite your own imagination, will confound you and will provoke you to think about the world around you. Enjoy them.
