Tom’ya Bowden was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. Since a child she has been fascinated by creative arts. During her elementary years, Tom’ya showed her budding gift for the visual arts by drawing pictures for family and friends which were kept and ‘exhibited’ on their refrigerators for all to view. In addition to her talent for drawing and painting, Tom’ya has always been involved in other performing arts such as theater and dance. During her high school years she formed a dance group and competed in many dance competitions where the troupe received both prizes and critical acclaim.

Tom’ya lost her mother when she was 16, leaving her in a situation where she had no other choice but to make a living for herself. Dancing and painting was her way to seek a solution to the problem. Being seen by many artists in the entertainment industry, she was able to audition, dance, and travel the world with many renowned Rap and R&B singers.

Tom’ya then tested the waters in acting and acquired a contract from one of the top commercial agencies in Hollywood. From her appearances on screen and stage she has accumulated credits in Commercials, TV, Film, and Theater.

Never abandoning her love for art and design, Tom’ya enrolled in FIDM (The Fashion Institute of design & Merchandising) and received an Associate of Arts degree in Visual Communications with honors/Cum Laude

Tom’ya’s inspiration stems from everyday life experiences - good or bad. Her canvases are layered with bold colors to accentuate mood, highlight emotion, and make a statement. She paints whatever she feels at that moment. “I never force a piece; if I get stuck, I’ll put it down and move on to the next.”

She considers her style as eclectic, using different mediums, and recycled materials. “I’ll paint on anything that has a surface.”

Tom’ya Bowden’s paintings are personal expressions of the “defining” experiences we all encounter at certain times in our lives - love and deception, happiness and pain, success and failure, loss and gain. Though the canvas tells the artist’s own story, it is a story we can all relate to. However, whatever meaning Tom’ya infuses into the message of her works, they leave a lot up to viewer’s own understanding. Each viewer can find his/her own interpretation of the subject to hand.

“Art is my life, it is who I am.”

Her work has been showcased and featured in many art shows and galleries around the Los Angeles area.
