Sylvia Hamilton Goulden’s artwork has been described as having a “joie de vivre” that reflects her dance background. Filled with bold colors and kinetic energy, her paintings project an exciting vitality that has delighted viewers at her extensive California exhibits. Her creations in several mediums have been enthusiastically received and she has exhibited, and is represented in many private collections, in the United States and abroad. Before focusing primarily on painting, Sylvia was co-director of FreeFlight Dance Company, an innovative group that performed in art galleries and museums, designing improvisational dances inspired by the artwork on exhibit. She has devoted many years to visual and performing arts learning programs, leading workshops for teachers, children and community groups as an Artist Specialist in Southern California and was Executive Director of Bethune Ballet Dance Outreach, an arts program for disabled children. Sylvia is a current member of Women Painters West, Collage Society of America, The Valley Watercolor Society, and was a founding director of Artist Co-op 7. She continues to teach art as
her time permits
Artist Statement
“When creating, I search for movement and energy, often using bold color; sometimes a softer, lyrical side is revealed, at times whimsy and humor. I find that I am compelled to work in different media, constantly searching and experimenting, realizing finally, that my curiosity and sense of adventure have given me many facets of expression. My work has produced several series in different genres. Exploring and losing myself in the experience of making art brings me pleasure; sometimes a means to an inner connection that is both spiritual and healing. I love the movement of curves and angles; of touching and dancing over them, creating movement from movement.”
The following is an excerpt from a review by Luis De la Cruz, Project Director of the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
“. . . the works seem to evade the criteria generally applicable to mainstream acceptance and challenges the viewer's intellect and instinct to engage.
The paintings, mixed media and monotypes are immediate and beautiful. Goulden's love of surface texture, light and illusionist ambiguities are responsible for our falling under the spell of these magical works. The work graduates abstraction to a kind of symbolic shorthand. That is, an apparent abstract work will turn out to be composed of figurations, which have sensual connotation.
We can find a stylistic decisiveness, a tendency in order to reinforce the theatrical statement. Thus, the most figurative paintings are interesting because they surrender to figuration, but also for the way they express emotionalism.”
