Susanne Belcher, a Los Angeles-based native Californian, is an award winning experimental mixed media artist. She found her artistic passion over seventeen years ago painting bold and colorful abstract southwest landscapes in oil and watercolor. Although she still considers herself a painter, she now incorporates paint with collage, photography, printmaking, image transfers, found materials and transparencies. The images she creates reflect Susanne’s background in psychology, her love of nature and interest in photography, things spiritual and architectural. She enjoys playing with the idea of choices and their consequences – humanity’s relationship with nature and spirituality, urban sprawl and its impact on the environment, and transitions from darkness into light. She becomes both the observer and the participant in her work, often superimposing her own shadow form over other graphic elements. Her current work with transparency film gives the illusion of movement and transformation – like looking at a video or hologram, revealing hidden non-static images. She creates her own unique architecture– sophisticated, intricate, often provocative, surreal and mysterious.
“There is nothing more exhilarating to me than tapping into what I call “the creative stream” or surfing the collective unconscious. I may begin with an intention, then the piece I’m working on just seems to take on a life of its own making the journey more important than the end result.”
