Susan ‘suki’ Kuss was born into a world of art and music. Her father was an award winning animator and her mother a pianist as well as a graphic designer. Susan discovered her artistic roots quickly, her parents encouraging her to find her own path, and to develop her own identity.

As she explored many mediums with established artists/teachers she fell in love with the process of making art and being with other artists. The companionship and empathy she found with others was all consuming and personally fulfilling.  Utilizing the skills that she learned in her marketing career, she was asked to sit on the boards of several of the artistic organizations that she joined.  Assisting other artists and these organizations became a very important part of her life.  As president of the Valley Institute of Visual Art (VIVA), Susan found a perfect forum to assist others and make contributions in the art world.  Through VIVA, she is helping to bring Kent Twitchell’s beloved mural, the Freeway Lady, to the Gallery wall.  This will be the first major piece of public art to be installed in the San Fernando Valley.

Susan has developed an award winning career as a mixed media artist over the past 20 years and her work is showcased in many private collections. She is a member of Women Painter’s West and Collage Artist’s of America but focuses most intensely on “Inseparable Wings”, a group she founded of four women artists and close friends whose art looks at the complexities of relationships and women in the 21st Century.

“Collage is a fascinating approach to diverse expression.  I find this diversity the perfect vehicle to reach each viewer. My current work reflects the history of women, the passage of time and the precarious nature of life. With the incorporation of fabrics, fibers, vintage lace and personal symbols integrated with highly textured grounds, I strive to add the element of grace that reflects this theme.  I am intrigued with the feminine, that dominant presence in the family…the image of women sitting in a circle, working with their hands, creating what were necessities and are now works of art.  The hands of women; miraculous in their capacity to give and receive”.

Life is a feather balanced on the tip of a pencil.

The wind can blow in any direction…

The feather will be lifted, tossed and spirited away.

It may disappear to reappear again,

to balance once more, for a time…

on the tip of a pencil. ~Susan “suki” Kuss~
