Steve Metzger studied at Fullerton College and currently teaches fine arts at the same college from where he graduated in 1970. In the past he has also taught at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. Steve’s is a multi media artist - a talented song writer and musician as well as a painter and sculptor. While his still lifes and landscapes are done with exceptional detail they are not ‘quasi-photographic’ renditions. Steve uses a heightened color palette and shows an extraordinary especially ability to emphasis the effects of light reflecting on, or being absorbed by, different surfaces. During his career Steve has received commissions from corporations, city administrations and other institutions to create numerous large public sculptures. His paintings are to be found in many private and corporate collections.
Thoughts on Painting: Looking back on the history of art and all of the “isms”, I have read about artists who found themselves creating and then summing up their own personal styles.
Others found some cause or human condition that propelled them.
I spent a lot of years trying to catch up, to create something of my own, ultimately, realizing that I never could be Picasso or Jackson Pollock or anyone else but me.
I learned a lot thru the process of working in different ways and emulating artists I admired. I am a big fan of education. It helps to know when you’re copying and whether or not you're really being original - if that is really an issue.
In any case, I'd like to believe that my art comes from a real place and is honest.
When the writers are gone, and time passes, what remains, hopefully, is the work.
Perhaps someone someday will look at one of my paintings and, without knowing all of the issues of today, will simply enjoy the experience of seeing it.
In the meantime, I simply enjoy the process of creating it, the experience of seeing it, and the anticipation of the next painting.
