SOOkyung Bae was born in 1980 in Seoul Korea. He grew up there and moved to California 10 years ago for a college education. He has always found that differences in culture are a tremendous factor in defining one’s self and this has influenced his present body of work which represents portraits of friends from different walks of life.
Traveling throughout Japan, Indonesia, U.S. and South Korea, he was fascinated by how
differences in nationality produce incredibly different paths in life yet, world-wide, people’s daily lives are essentially similar – we experience the same emotions, rely on the same necessities, and are plagued by the same worries. Realizing there is no one universal measure that defines an individual’s worth, SOOkyung has set out to capture the many moments in life that are fleeting and inconsequential; not the significant moments by which others can define us, but the non-decisive moments which are for our own indulgence and which we cannot share.
In SOOkyung’s photography individuals are often reproduced in a repetitive manner or their image is made obscure. His aim is to express the duality between the everyday superficiality of mundane life (which we abhor), and the significant moments to which we struggle to surrender. It is to highlight the importance of intimate moments which compels him as a photographer to capture those times when façades are dropped and, in absolute privacy, we becomes ourselves. By analogy, one could say that while actors play characters on stage or in a movie, between takes, between acts, they revert to their real selves. In these private moments there is no glamour, no applause, no adulation; there is no script to guide them - just their own strengths and weakness and private thoughts to see them through.
