Sergio Vasquez was born 1961 in Mexico. Since his first art class more than 20 years ago at Los Angeles City College, Sergio has followed his instinctive impulse to paint. He often feels as if he was once a painter in a distant previous life that he had left with an accomplished mission. And now, here he is again with another opportunity to fulfill that unfinished life. In 2010 Sergio published a book called “The Language of Portraits” which contains images of his prolific body of work from 1990 until 2010, his thoughts on art and his own vision of the artist’s place in society.
The book is dedicated to “anyone and everyone whoever wanted to do art or wished to get involved in any creative process…….. If you believe in yourself and desire to leave traces of your existence on this planet, there is not a better time than now.”
Excerpt from The Language of Portraits: “I am captivated by faces and the human form. There is nothing like voluptuousness, the flesh, the light and shadows (on it), the presence, the proportions, and the positive and negative space of the body shape. There is a feeling of communion which gets me excited and feeds me with energy when I work on portraits or figurative works. There is nothing so magical as working from a live model."
