Look at his NEW WORK: 2009 - 2010
The strongest influences on Roy Prinz’s style come from nature. His artistic personality reflects a naturalist’s approach to understanding the very essence of the subject. His works capture instants in time, moments of reflection and poignant memories which are rendered timeless in vivid landscapes and seascapes infused with color, light and harmony. His Impressionist paintings, done in an informal style which is both direct and unencumbered, invite the viewer into the work as if experiencing the moment personally. The detail is still very apparent, when viewed from a distance, while closer inspection reveals a multi faceted layering of shapes and edges that add depth to the panoramas. The juxtaposition of the colors creates a vibrancy that implies the illusion of impermanence and suggesting both movement and changing of light.
Roy’s affinity for the outdoors and exploration comes from his childhood. Born in 1950, he grew up in South Lee, a small New England town in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts. His family owned a modest resort hotel located in a rural area surrounded by open meadowlands, streams, a river and rolling hills. As the oldest of eight siblings he was often called upon to help his family with the daily chores and in the various activities offered to guests at the hotel, which included outdoor excursions, and visits to local art galleries and museums. The home was filled with art and music. Both his parents played piano and his mother had trained as an artist, working as a commercial artist in New York before marrying. She had also been a member of the Art Students’ League. The resort hosted a variety of entertainment for the guests provided by visiting actors, musicians and dancers, and Roy was inspired to explore his own creative and artistic talents while watching them perform. He began drawing and sketching at an early age achieving limited recognition for his skills during his school years. He also took formal piano lessons and later took up the guitar the instrument he now prefers for his personal enjoyment. Roy is also an avid photographer learning from the lens a better understanding of composition and light, that he confers to his oil paintings where shape, color, composition, light and content come together as one.
“The creation of art is more about philosophy than technique. Technique is one’s representative faculty. After one learns about the physicality of the paint and brushes, and their relationship during the process of painting, what remains is the character and energy of the artist that is captured during the process of creation. The artist’s power of observation, sense of aesthetics and contextual representation become the structure of the final composition. The emotion conveyed by the energy of the artist through the brushwork enables a painting. It is the unique spirit of the artist at that moment in time which reflects the summation of one’s life experiences and beliefs. Every painting tells a story: not in words but in a visual context. When successful a painting resonates with the observer on a personal level as an affirmation of life.”
