Richard Rownak was born in Northwest Arkansas and studied photography at the University of Arkansas before starting his own photography business, mostly doing portraits and working with a local advertising agency. Much time was spent in his darkroom learning about graphic techniques.

After four years of freelancing in Northwest Arkansas he decided to explore the Western United States and moved to Los Angeles where he continued to do freelance photography. He sold his work at art shows and did production still and special affects creations for motion pictures and their advertising. Later assignments were covering corporate events and some product photography. Traveling the west, Richard and his wife Pamela explored and captured the beauty on film. His Landscape photography won prizes in the Sierra Club photo contest and he wrote for Petersen Publishing. He studied video production at UCLA. He explored the technique of creating special effects images with multiple exposure techniques, which were featured in newspapers and magazines.

In the early 90’s he started to explore computer graphics and graphic design. Photography assignments were diverse from architectural subjects, mostly restaurant interiors to technical photos for foreign car companies Kia, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Honda and Toyota. He shot images for technical training manuals for the car companies.

He shot several black and white 16mm films, with friends in Hollywood.

Richard has a deep appreciation for historical architecture and feels its preservation is vital. Serving on the board of a historical preservation group, Hollywood Heritage was rewarding for him.

He developed a unique technique he calls “Scantography”, as the result of his experimentation into the many aspects of the visual arts. To commercialize this idea he set up a website at Scantography.com through which he sells his greeting cards and instructional PDF.

“It’s great to see how many other ways people have used a flatbed scanner and computer to be creative.”

Though much of Richard’s work is in the surrealist genre he has also created many more realistic graphics by scanning live flowers. Currently his attention focuses on the techniques of 3D programs, whereby he mixes the resulting still images with other elements to create his intriguing and thought provoking work..

“Life gives us only so much time, we should strive to make the most of it. Everyone’s enjoyment and interest are different, staying fresh and open to new knowledge and expression is how I want to spend my time.”

Currently Richard works as an Internet Manager for an Auto Group in Los Angeles and still does photography and design work.
