R.D Lottie Jr. is a native of South Bend, Indiana. His fascination with clowns began as a child, when his neighborhood friends watched the arrival of the Ringling Brothers Circus which unloaded its freight cars near their homes. As a child, R. D painted and drew figures, similar to the ones that are shown in this current collection. But as he matured, he lost interest in art all together, becoming active in sport and the pursuit of his education.
He went on to become a school teacher, an attorney and most recently, retiring after 24 years as President/ CEO of Pacific Coast Regional Small Business Development Corporation in Los Angeles, CA to pursue his artwork full time.
After many years of formal education, which had nothing to do with art, R. D began collecting clown figurines and sculptures. Although his clown collection grew with the help of many friends, collecting alone did not revive the joyful spirit that he had as a child artist.
In 1984 R. D started painting his own version of clowns. The first three were portraits of faces and his children commented that they reminded them of R. D. himself and his 2 brothers, their uncles. The first of those three creations was “Marcus” the clown, a symbolic father of all R.D’s other clowns, and who serves as a logo on his R.D.’s personal website. Noting the enthusiasm and excitement of his children and their friends as each of his early paintings came to life, R.D was inspired by their exuberance to paint more clowns. It was not long before adults, too, were enjoying R. D’s Clown Art. Soon many admirers began collecting his vividly distinctive pieces, featuring them in office settings and as complements to family rooms, children’s and living rooms. R.D. Lottie Jr.’s colorful paintings appeal to people all over the world sharing the artist creative expression of the Clowns of Joy.
The artist’s work can be seen in the city of San Fernando County Public Library and also at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles.
Many of the works are available as Giclée Prints.
