Paul Chamberlain was raised in the Los Angeles suburb of Eagle Rock, and began his initial foray into the art world while in high school. He continued his journey through graduation from the renowned ArtCenter College of Design.
He then spent several years at design firms in Detroit working on various projects.  His most notable design, the logo for the Bay Area Rapid Transit train, graces the front of each BART train to this day.
Returning to California in the mid-60’s, Chamberlain settled into the advertising/graphic design field. Creative projects included annual reports, outdoor signage, print ads, brochures and even pop-up greeting cards.
Finally, encouraged by a close friend and working artist, he returned to his easel and, through sketching and traditional oil painting, rekindled his fine art creative flame. From his house in the Verdugo Hills, Chamberlain travels throughout California and the west. His favorite Kernville area of the Sierras, the deserts, the beaches and the cities have all provided him a rich variety of subjects to capture on canvas.
Chamberlain’s love of color and composition has led him to explore both the Plein Air and in-studio experience. His studies, with such notable artists as Calvin Liang, Frank Serrano and Ron Chesley, in addition to the continual visual influence of master artists Sam Hyde Harris, Sergei Bongart, and Maynard Dixon help him sharpen his eye for the strong color palette, interesting subjects and unique compositions.
“You’ll notice several things about my paintings; color, interesting subjects and unique compositions.
First off, I like color. I always have. Whether it’s purple shadows on a bridge at evening, a field of orange marigolds or a brightly colored tricycle being pedaled furiously by my grandson…for me it all starts with color.
Second and third - go hand in hand.  I like off-beat subject matter like old farm vehicles stuck in the weeds, kids & pets caught in action and landscapes & buildings in various stages of light and shadow.
It all interacts somehow to produce the final results in each of my paintings.
I never know what I’ll come across next to paint…it’s very exciting and I’m constantly looking at the world around me for the next canvas subject. I’m always amazed at the visual variety of possibilities that pop-up.”
Paul Chamberlain is a member of the Oil Painters of America, the California Art Club and the Pasadena Society of Artists.
