Creativity has driven British born artist Nicki Newfield all her life. It first found an outlet in acting and most aspects of the entertainment industry, and later in advertising, graphic arts, music and finally, painting.

The ever-challenging Londoner was always most passionate about watercolor and her chief inspiration came from her life in England and the English master watercolorists.

Nicki lived in Italy and Belgium, and after marrying an American, made California her home. It wasn’t until her children left for college that she took up painting full time. “I didn’t aim for a specific style” she says “but instead painted everything that was pleasing to me”

A few years ago, Nicki started to incorporate collage into her work. After a visit to Russia she became so intrigued with the art, especially the icons, that her work evolved into mixed media and collage on canvas.

Her current works are highly textured, combining many layers of paper and metallic paint. “When I start a new canvas, I have no idea where the process will take me. I like to incorporate renaissance and religious images, but sometimes my theme can be eliminated during the course of my layering and my finished work can take on a whimsical mood” Nicki does not work with bright colors but instead, prefers to use more muted “Tuscan” tones. Like her watercolors, she uses transparent glazes which reveal hidden images and surprises to the viewer. “I love every minute of this artistic process and the discovery in capturing the essence of a bygone era.”

This award-winning artist has exhibited both locally and in Europe and is actively involved with The Valley Watercolor Society, Women Painters West and is the current (2009) President of Collage Artists of America.
