Myra Epstein received her formal education in art at Hornsey College of Art in London, England. She has been painting in Los Angeles since 1982. Her watercolors are distinct by the exceptional use of sharp, bold, vibrant colors. The selection of paintings displayed here ranges from scenes reflecting her recollections of the English countryside to depictions of the ethnic diversity of Southern California.
After arriving in Los Angeles from London, Myra was immediately fascinated with the different quality and intensity of the light –the peach warm glow that renders seemingly ordinary objects more dramatic in the sunlight. She was also delighted to experience the diversity of cultures that are integrated into the mainstream of Los Angeles life: Native American, Hispanic, Asian and African-American. Living in within this diversity has opened new opportunities to her as an avid collector of objets d’art. She is constantly finding new and interesting artifacts to incorporate into her diverse still life paintings.

Myra’s palette changed radically when she began painting in Southern California. Here she began to experiment with more vibrant primary colors as opposed to the more subtle tones she had used in England. She was drawn instinctively to the Mexican painters Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo and Frida Kahlo, not only for their imagery but also for the sensuality which is infused in their colors and light.
Her preferred medium is watercolor because of the spontaneity and immediacy that it affords her. The medium allows her to work in light delicate strokes where the paint is applied in a more saturated way. The results are delicate and luminescent paintings that are outstanding in detail and finess
“I love painting still lifes because they allow me to put together objet d’art that especially appeal to me in any variation I chose. I am fascinated by the still life genre draws upon social and cultural history. The artist assembles objects that represent or have particular relevance to the life and time in which he or she works. The finished work is often an illuminating insight into the social, cultural and historic setting.
Many of Myra’s paintings are available as giclee prints. Each original is scanned on a state-of-the-art flatbed at Artscans in Culver City and each edition is proofed, then printed, using the best materials to achieve the truest reproduction possible.
