A native New Yorker, Mira Gandy graduated from Music and Art High school in New York City, before studying Art History at the American College in Paris.
Mira creates mixed media paintings of Figurative and Abstract art, combining acrylic, pastel, natural paper and photographs. Her expressionistic figurative works mostly depict women caught in a moment of thought or reflection. They are about the overall energy and inherent power that all women possess. Her abstracts are about the continuous movement of life itself and our emotional responses to the physical world, to the natural elements and to the universe as a whole.
Her artistic inspiration comes from various sources: from her personal experiences, spirituality and imagination, from women met while traveling, from events in the media, and from Gauguin, Rousseau, Caribbean and Mexican Art."
Mira has exhibited extensively in galleries on the both the west and east coasts since 1987 and dedicates much of her time to teaching art to youth in the Los Angeles area. In 2003 she was awarded two certificates of appreciation by the City of Angeles in recognition of her artistic talents and her contributions to the local community.
The many avid collectors of her work include: actors Anna Maria Horsford and Rolonda Watts, singer Freddie Jackson, entertainment columnist Flo Anthony, music executive Barry Hankerson, percussionist Terrilyn Carrington, sports agent Jerome Stanley and Getty Museum Executive Chef Helene Kennan.
Ms. Gandy has a commissioned portrait of the late publicist Fredrick Murphy housed in the archives at the Schomburg Museum in Harlem. In 2001 she was also commissioned by the Los Angeles County Fire Fighters to create a memorial portrait of their twelve brothers lost in the World Trade Center tragedy.

“My life philosophy is based on my belief in Nichiren Buddhism which teaches that all people posses the potential for greatness, this is the essence of who we are. That we create our own circumstances and environment through our words, thoughts and actions and that all humanity and nature are interconnected, nothing can live in isolation.
It has helped me understand and recognize the greatness in myself and to see it in others. This spiritual foundation inspires me to create art that focuses on the beauty of life and the power and determination of the human spirit.
I enjoy using an abundance of color in my work because for me, color is synonymous with emotion. Some of my pieces are about using colors to create a mood to insight a feeling. With others I am more interested in taking something recognizable and using a combination of mediums to blur the line between what is painted or photographed to entice and encourage the viewer to perceive something ordinary in a different way.
My goal as an artist is to touch the hearts of all who see my work. For that one moment while viewing my art that you can "feel something" it is about the human response to my work... that's what is important to me.”
