Over the years, Michael Hayden found many outlets to satisfy his thirst for creativity. His early interests included music, special effects for film, fashion, interior design and landscaping. Even though he found success through many of these outlets, there always seemed to be something missing. Once he discovered painting, he realized his true calling.
Originally from Memphis, Tennessee, Michael moved first to New York City (in 1986) and then to San Francisco in 1993 where he enrolled at The Day Studio. Later, Michael established a successful decorative painting business in the Bay Area. Today he lives and works in Los Angeles pursuing a full-time career as a fine artist.
It was while working on the background for a mural in Oakland, California that he was introduced to a centuries-old method of fine art painting known as encaustic. Originally discovered and used by the Greeks in 5BC as a way to make their ships watertight, “enkaustikos,” meaning "to heat" or "to burn,” is a medium comprised of melted beeswax mixed with pigment and resin.
By 1995, in an effort to find ways to recycle materials, Michael started looking for ways to incorporate them into his paintings setting off a process of media-media creations that would eventually become the foundation for his signature style of original fine art.
STATEMENT:
“I like to burn things.” – My fascination with fire began during my childhood. I used to call it “experimentation.” I guess that’s how, as an adult artist, I was attracted to the technique of encaustic painting. It allowed me to channel my inclination for burning things into a form of creative expression. I enjoy using such items as broken glass, scrap wood and metal along with other materials including cheesecloth, burlap and a variety of metal leafs as tools for communicating my ideas in an abstract way. For me, the practice of embedding a wide range of objects into beeswax has a way of capturing and preserving their energy. When I create art, social and spiritual questions overlap with an interest in communicating my ideas. I become fascinated with each work of art as its soul starts to reveal itself through contrasting elements of color and texture. That being said, I admit that I’m devoted to the feeling of just letting go and creating work that is free of the interference and influence of mind, body or outside distractions.”
