Michael Chearney is known for his passionate works, filled with color and explosive textures. His acrylics seem to leap from the canvas, as if their own life energy could not be contained. “Art for me is a living thing…a moment, a feeling, an experience, captured and preserved forever in the texture and color of wonderfully sexy malleable acrylic paint. I watch the great moments of my life surface from the subconscious and appear on the canvas more direct, more complex, more fascinating and revealing than I could ever imagine.”
Michael Chearney’s works are known for their sophisticated color balance and almost sculptural 3-dimensional quality. They reflect a naked primal authenticity, a spontaneous expression and a search for truth. “I have never been more certain that there exists an energy, a muse, a creative force beyond myself. The paintings seem to just flow thru me. They have their own energy; the paint is alive; the canvas is alive; the whole studio is alive with positive, chilling energy, and I feel so grateful to be plugged into the current.”
Chearney has been painting since he was 3 years old. Back then his grandparents would hand him coloring books and encouraged him to paint grass blue, sky green and people any color whatsoever. Most importantly they told him that it was perfectly OK to draw outside the lines. This freedom ‘to see outside the box’ is reflected widely in his paintings.
“I stare at all the paint covering my studio walls. The splashes, flicks, dots and traces of colors that are the accumulative effect of having painted so many canvases within that space are witness to so many combined experiences. Those walls are a glimpse into my soul. A song will come to me, a song I will paint to. I must paint to. I put it on, press the repeat button, and it plays over and over until I’m done. I am lost in the studio, in the paint and the music. When I am finished I am covered in paint….and I hate to wash it off!
“The Chearney Studio Gallery” was established in 2005 and is located in West Hollywood. A celebration to mark it’s 4th anniversary in 2009 will be held by presenting a show entitled The Sand People; paintings ‘sculpted on canvas’ with acrylics, sand, gel and organic materials. Michael Chearney has an ongoing show at the DSI Gallery at 653 N. Robertson featuring acrylic canvases painted with long stem roses as brushes. In this tribute to his favorite impressionists, the artist has preserved and embedded the rose brushes into the canvas.
