Max Neutra began drawing at an early age, often copying from his father’s collection of R. Crumbs comics and his artistic creativity continued to develop in high school as he studied art, media literacy and music production.
After Graduating from the Academy of Communication Arts and Technology (NM) in 1997, Max took figure drawing classes at SFCC, but it was music production that spurred him to move to Northern California and attend Expression Center for New Media where he received his bachelor’s degree in the Sound Arts program in 2000. Continuing the theme of his education, Max composed electronic music at home and worked as an Audio/Video Technician in San Francisco, and then moved to Warner Music Group in Los Angeles. It was in 2005 that he began to explore the true function of all the drawings in the margins of his school work and meeting notes.
After experiencing what he described as a “true epiphany”, he reined in his musical pursuits in order to make as much art as possible, feeling that visual art was his true calling. With music still close to his heart, it was on stage amongst various musical performers where Max first experimented with live painting. This led into a continuing list of invitations to paint at many events and locations around Los Angeles, including the X-Games, Sunset Junction, and the Hammer Museum.
Max is known for his wild and frenetic style. His images are bold, honest, and at times shocking, depicting the beauty in nature and the grotesque in mankind, ultimately fueled by his fascination with the physiological psychology of the creative act. He believes that the artistic process, while informed by science, ultimately comes from the unconscious limbic system of the brain and remains mysterious.
“Focusing on human and animal forms, I strive for each piece of work to be like a signature - quick and messy, brave and permanent - unmistakably written by my hand. Written by the machine that is my body. I try to let the body-machine drive and make the big decisions. Once an image begins to take shape, I accept what it is and fill out the details in response to the origins. Practicing this approach, a stream of surprises emerges, and I am in a constant state of discovery. Although my imagery seems to have a political tone from time to time, it’s not the message but the hunger for discovery that drives me. I feel like I’m always waiting for things to get weird. Live painting feeds that hunger for unpredictability and adventure by continuing to take me on an urban safari through LA. The grotesque faces and contemplative animals I paint are snapshots taken along the ride. An eclectic collection of specimens and the way I feel about them. Yet, there is a common thread through all the work, a common language no matter the subject. It feels as if the subject is just an excuse to paint the line. It’s the line itself that speaks, and it always speaks the truth. It is my goal to become ever more fluent in the language of the line and continue to capture all the strange sights along the way.”
