“I am a Mixed Media Collage Artist living and working in Los Angeles. My journey as an artist began when I first picked up a paintbrush at age 10 and has led me to places and through have been inspirations for most of my work, in form and feel they have been predominantly abstract in nature while still allowing the viewer’s imagination to find familiar images and connect to the emerging themes. In addition to the abstract work I also create collages incorporating family photos, letters and other personal imagery. This more recent style has led me down another artistic path creating commissioned pieces which I call “Family Heritage” Collages.
Each of my collages typically evolves from a thought, a vision, a memory, a photograph or a scrap of paper –essentially the source is something that stimulates and moves me emotionally. As I develop a work a vision begins to emerge. From that I develop the piece into a single finished work or it grows into a series. I collect and use materials that others might consider trash. Old and odd bits of paper, receipts, letters, tags, programs, ads, brochures and found objects are recycled and transformed into rich materials that become art. I enjoy being able to discover, visualize and present the beauty in discarded items.
In essence I create my collages using the same basic design principles and structure that collage artists have traditionally followed. I have been influenced by the Cubists such as Pablo Picasso and the work of other 20th Century greats like Robert Rauschenberg, Kurt Schwitters and Raymond Saunders. My art incorporates paint, pencils and pastels within the collages. The work is built and then revealed in layers: sometimes searching for a texture, a color, something unknown –the missing other layer. The energy and depth build as more layers are uncovered.
I studied art at Los Angeles Valley College, Interior design at UCLA and then completed my education at The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. I am always looking for new means to satisfy my creative hunger.
