There has never been any time in her life when Lori Escalera has not worked creatively. To her, painting is like the oxygen necessary to breath. She is, sensitive, imaginative, enthusiastic and truly passionate about creating art. Escalera enjoys working in a variety of mediums: oil painting, tile, murals and street painting chalk art are a few of her focuses. She lives fully engaged in creatively expressing her art forms seven days a week, not only in the studio, but also actively participating in community activities. Working with community always allows her to feel that her can impact people and change the quality and paths of their lives. She enjoys bringing adults, seniors and youth together to participate in group murals or in street painting. For her, street painting or ‘street chalk art’ is a type of performance art that creates personal memories like a captured photo. Unlike a painting on canvas, which can only be owned by a person in an exclusive position of money or power, ‘street art’ is owned and shared by everyone!. Lori Escalera’s devotion has always been for the human figure. She strives to capture the unique beauty of the human spirit embodied in the mortal body. The essence of her figurative work is to capture “The Soul,” that momentary expression that reveals itself in human behavior and emotional gestures. Her work is intense and emotive, affecting the viewer in ways they would normally avoid. People as subject matter are the artist’s mirrors. Sometimes they reflect what she relishes in humanity, and sometimes what repels her. Escalera questions why we hold beliefs and values as we do, by addressing mythos, religion and cultural issues in her artwork. “I look at the mundane functions and practices societies take for granted and ask questions for us to answer, together.”
Lori likes to document social and cultural events of different societies and their rituals. She has painted series about the Mexican Day of the Dead and explores ritual celebration in her work. She is devoted to the concept of the ‘Goddess’ and the celebration Women, and explores her own ideas about femininity and the role of women in society. Escalera also has a love of nature and paints colorful impressions of the Southern California landscapes capturing light and color in a contemporary and impressionistic way.
Lori thinks it is important to work with all archival materials and pays particular attention to the fact that her artwork will be durable, lightfast, sturdy and archival. She speaks directly to manufacturers before determining if the products are appropriate for her use.
