Launa D. Romoff took her first collage class at 51. It was an experience that changed her life as an artist, and has since become a passion in her life. She realized that through this medium that she can best express her inner voice, her strengths and vulnerabilities. She considers her art, through the medium of collage, to be a re-composition, where the forgotten and unwanted are orchestrated into a familiar, yet newly discovered synthesis that provokes the viewer to connect with it.
Launa seeks her materials everywhere- re-arranging and combining them instinctively onto the canvas to create easily identifiable works that convey her own personal spiritual experience.
Retrieving that which has been discarded, finding elements of beauty in the thrown-away, and then incorporating them into her artwork has encouraged her to challenge her own perspectives of beauty. As each canvas progresses, Launa is compelled by the intrinsic beauty of the materials and their interaction in the composition. She is wholeheartedly emotionally engulfed in the piece at hand, willingly dedicating part of her soul to the audience. The finished pieces radiate an overall sense of peace, focus and a wholeness that is both enticing and calming to the spirit.
Launa Romoff has been working with collage/mixed media since 1997. She has been inspired by the work of Kurt Schwitters, regarded by many as the 20th Century master of collage. Much of her work follows the advice of Schwitters who once said:
"How I use the material at hand is often more important than the material itself".
