Kris Cahill is an abstract artist (and clairvoyant) who lives in a loft in downtown Los Angeles with her husband Neil Olken who is an actor and film-maker. Kris is originally from Chicago and moved to L.A. in 2006.
Kris has been an artist all her life and graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a BFA in 1982. While a student she discovered, and began to develop, the unique painting technique that she continues to use today:-Reverse Painting on Clear Vinyl.
Painting in this method with acrylic colors on vinyl has allowed Kris to achieve images that she could accomplish on canvas. In the reverse technique it is not always possible to see what is happening and the results are surprising and often magical.
All the paintings on this page are created using this technique and are samples of the prolific work that Kris has executed over the years. To date she has done more than 900 paintings.
In early 2008 Kris became more interested in painting spirit and energy. As an expression of this interest, she committed to painting more abstract imagery in her work. The series of paintings that Kris has worked on since, such as “The Agents Of Change”, “Energy”, and “Storms” express deeper dimensions of content and greater richness of color. The themes are of spiritual growth, change, freedom, love, beauty & healing and, above all, the truths we find in them. In Kris’s life and in her work emotion plays a major role. Beauty is her passion and spirit a key role.
“There is something intuitive that can’t be voiced; but it is felt or known. To explain it would ruin it. There is no need to analyze or to prove it. Each one can have a personal experience of it. It’s that feeling you remember from when you were at the beach as a kid, or hiking in a hushed, green forest. It is the smell of the earth, the emotion you felt while going through something big in your life. There is a sense of understanding at a deeper level, a sense of what is truly real; a kind of grace and elegance, an awe of what may be possible. Perhaps, it is gratitude for what you’ve had in your life.”
The special technique -reverse painting on vinyl- enhances the vibrancy and the warmth of the colors. The effect is that Kris’s paintings literally sparkle in the light - like jewels of truth.
