Karen Hansen has loved painting her whole life. For 22 years she worked in the field of animation, traveling extensively and visiting film studios all over the world. Though working in a fascinating and challenging industry her dream was always to devote her time fully to painting. Since 2001 she has been able to do so.
Her paintings have been exhibited all over the USA in both solo and group shows and her works can be found in many private collections. In addition to the shows in which she has participated she has received many awards and commissions.
For a Minneapolis Art for Architecture competition Karen submitted a drawing for a manhole cover design reflecting life in the city. Her design was selected by the judging committee and sub sequentially it was cast in brass and installed n the sidewalk outside the Minneapolis City Center.
Among her other awards she was featured in a book called Best of California Artists and Artisans published in 2006 – awarded second place in the Acrylic Painting category.
Karen Hansen is a native of Chicago. In 1985 she decided to leave the harsh, sometimes brutal winter climate and moved to Los Angeles to seek the sun. Once here in California she fell in love with the state and she now makes her home in Burbank with her husband – and cat.
“I seek balance, harmony and calm in my paintings; a resting place from our complex, tension filled world. I explore both the intensity & subtlety of extreme light conditions, capturing the ambience, mystery and radiance of those extremes. Rich color adds to the emotional value and mood of each painting. I want my work to be luminous, serene and introspective – a place of well being.
In our fast paced, tension filled world we are always in a state of motion. The spaces we inhabit, how we fill our days, even our relationships with others become, to various degrees, blurs of sensations, emotions, memories in the complexities of our lives. The paintings on this page from the Ethereaseries reveal impressions, distillations of experiences, glances of the places we've been. The works have an elusive, dream-like quality with translucent, muted tones creating a calming effect.”
By suggesting rather than defining, these paintings invite the viewer to complete the experience by the emotions, memories and perceptions he or she brings to the paintings.
The colors of each piece are layered until a quality of luminosity and depth is achieved. Karen Hansen transforms and reworks each painting repeatedly until the piece arrives at a place that feels instinctively right. This is a process of improvisation, experimentation, revision and intuition. The Ethereaseries is a sensual experience of surface, atmospheric color and abstract form.
