My name is Kumo. I was born in Japan and moved to Los Angeles in 1998.
In 2009 I set off on a prolonged trip to Asia, taking with me my sketchbook, pencils, pens and brushes and not really knowing what to expect to accomplish with them. These pieces of art were created during that trip. They are more a record of my emotional experiences than of the sights, landscapes and people of the regions I visited.
One time, I drew all night under the full moon in a small bungalow deep in the forest of Phangan island (Thailand). Immersed into a simple, primitive, natural setting I was challenged to achieve simplicity and aura from within.
On another occasion I found myself in an all night drawing session with artists from many other countries met in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).
Another time, in Ubud, Bali Island, I drew for 3 consecutive days and nights, buoyed by a secret drink and with a constant flow of Gamelan music in my head. There, I felt my spirit transported into characters of legends and stories of fantasy that I heard a long time ago.
Near the Pashupatinath temple in Kathmandu, Nepal, among the ashes of a cremation site, I felt as if my own life force was emptying and although my mind was drained of thought, I began to draw. At the Pashupatinath temple in Kathmandu, I evidenced the natural cycle of life.
Another time, I drew among meditating monks and pilgrims in Mahabodhi temple in Bodh Gaya (India). There, I combined the energy and vibes transmitted from the background environment.
Although some pieces shown are incomplete, this is my current art. I hope to share my experiences from these pieces with you.
