Artist Statement
Raised in the LA suburban hills, I was greatly impacted by the gorgeous
mountain ranges, plants, and the animals that inhabit the terrain.
Conservation of nature is a common theme in my work.
In contrast, my formative years were in Seoul S. Korea. In the city I learned to love the urban landscape and industrial images of a concrete metropolis.
My artwork is an amalgamation of two cultures. Classic training as well as an urban and edgy feel is attributed from city life, growing up in Seoul.
Expression through color and homage to nature is from my life in the West.
The balance of two dramatically different lives has been my struggle, my
hope, my yin and yang, and now my Zen.
The artwork containing the girl portraits is all original work, graphite, oil,
and digital (no photography). Through the subtlest of expressions the "girl
portraits” convey a story, mood, something to draw the viewer in
wondering, "who is that girl and what is she thinking, feeling…I want to
know her...or perhaps, I am her." Instead of using obvious imagery I let the
eyes say it all. A constant theme throughout these particular works is the
uneasiness of what can lay under something or someone that is "beautiful".
I tend to use the relationship between colors to create moods...dark,
serene, haunting and in contrast light, chaotic, solid. Unlikely colors side
by side create a visual symphony.
Often times I like to combine technical rendering, conveying reality, contrasted with abstract colors representing “emotional reality”. I show contrast in many elements because it is the differences that make life seem so interesting.
