Jacquelyn Blue studied at California State University Northridge and obtained with a degree, with honors, in Art History. She is an active member in various local art associations such as Allied Artists, Pastel Society of the West, Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, Women Painters West and the California Art Club. In the past she has served as president of the Los Angeles Art Core and as president of the Malibu Art Association of which she is also currently serving as an active board member.
Having discovered a special love for pastel painting she has completed workshops over the years with accomplished professional pastel painters Maggie Price, Kim Fancher Lordier, Anita West, Richard McKinley and Urania Taubert.
Jacquelyn paints ‘plein air’ whenever possible but she also creates canvases from still photographs and sketches, while working in her Malibu studio.
“Plein air painting is one of the most wonderful and yet frustrating of artistic endeavors. First, trudging off into the hills looking for a place to paint is exhilarating. Then, finding a perfect spot, setting up, and painting for (hopefully) several uninterrupted hours to produce a new painting can give an unbelievable high. The painting doesn’t even have to be good! Each excursion is an invaluable experience. Sure, I take photos along the way to use later in studio paintings, however, those paintings that I actually create ‘plein air’ are truly the ones I most enjoy, and of which I am most proud.
After all, to do them I’ve had to hike, lugging a heavy 18lb backpack containing all my materials and then spend time setting up my paraphernalia. I have had to stand for hours, enduring the heat and/or cold, constantly fight off annoying bugs, and be polite (as far as I can) with all the curious passersby. Sometimes it seems an accomplishment just find the right spot, get set up organized, and survive through the day.”
I like working in pastels because they are the purest and simplest form of artist’s color. They consist of pure pigment and when mixed with just enough binder they can be molded into easy to use sticks. Pastels are considered paintings, and not drawings, because the color is applied in masses rather than in lines-as is the case with crayons. The medium is very durable and if the pastel artwork is framed properly it can last indefinitely.”
Jacquelyn’s work has been selected for juried shows at the Santa Monica Gallery and the California Heritage Museum.
