I have been making pottery for over 50 years. My primary consideration, when creating new works, has been to look for a synthesis of strong form and simple surface treatment.

I take the greatest satisfaction in casting pieces that are nicely finished, aesthetically pleasing, are useful, and are comfortable to hold and easy to care for.

I work in my own studio in the back yard where there is also a kiln ready to fire as soon as new work is created. Some of my designs are done in collaboration with sculptor and ceramic artist Joyce Newman who works side by side with me in our atelier in Pasadena, CA.

Part of my formal training as a pottery maker was undertaken at the New York School of Ceramics at Alfred NY. I also apprenticed with Kenneth Ferguson at Archie Bray Foundation, Helena MT.

In addition I have a BA from Harvard University

Over the years I have taught pottery making to many aspiring artisans and sculptors.

My teaching career spans over more than thirty years and has included time teaching design, production techniques, clay body formulation and kiln building in Colorado, Oregon, Wyoming and Washington state in college and university programs.

In 1968 I founded and managed Castle Clay Inc. to provide minority employment and to help meet community needs for studio space, supplies and instruction. Castle Clay Inc. not only provided employment by engaging personnel, but also gave learning opportunities to between 30 to 50 students a time, who otherwise would not have been able to pursue their interest in pottery and ceramics.

On occasion I have also participated in educational video and TV productions in which pottery learning has been the theme.
