Many contemporary artists focus on the figure as their primary subject vehicle of expression. Harold Hart-Nibbrig is a figurative artist who follows the path of modernist painters like Lucien Freud.
His subjects are pensive looking people, who are meticulously rendered in a realistic style. Some of his works reflect a persuasive mood of alienation and melancholy. Harold’s portrayals express the finite details of the subject in a virtuosity of brushstroke and color. They embody a modern sense of beauty in a contemporary artistic way. The surface detail, the choice of models and the pose, speak to a modern spectator of art.
The skin has translucence to it as passes over bones and veins. One gets a real physical construction to it from the texture; a strong sense of physicality is obtained from the different strokes which lend deeper depth of character to the subject.
It has been said that figurative art is “self portrait,” since every artist puts something of his own perspectives and values into his work. Figurative art, above all, invites the viewer to participate emotionally. It communicates universally to all. The portrayal of the body gives clues to how its creator thinks about beauty, mortality and consciousness itself.
A drawing or painting of a figure can express everything the artist is trying to say. A figurative painter is trying to unlock the secrets of the subject, of the body in endlessly new and different ways. Still life is painting of inanimate objects – we do not necessarily relate to it on an emotional level. But, the portrayal of the human figure conveys a magical sense of “life”. There is no more imagery more immediate, for metaphorical meaning and expression, than the human body.
Harold Hart-Nibbrig is a member of the Pasadena Society of Artists. He is an attorney by profession in Pasadena, CA.
