During her career as a professional photographer and multi-media producer Ellen Lane developed her profound sensibility for composition and use of light through the camera lens. She has been painting in her own distinctive style for more than twenty years, during which time her artworks have featured in numerous publications about contemporary art including The Best of Acrylic Paintings, Portrait Inspiration, California Dream Pictures and Living Artists 13 and local magazines and art journals.
Ellen Lane was mentored by many noted international artists including: Fritz Scholder, Nathan Oliveira, and George Herms. After honing her photography skills at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and Milwaukee Technical College: Lane looked to new directions and moved on to attend the Fine Art Master Program at the Santa Fe Institute of Fine Arts. More recently, Lane participated in an exclusive program at the renowned Santa Reparata International School of Fine Art in Florence Italy.
“Through my life I have made a series of choices.  I saw things I liked and was drawn to them.  I made choices to move in those directions.  The actions were sometimes planned and calculated but mostly they were spontaneous, from the heart.  I did not think out the consequences.  Because of these actions I fought the battles.  I chose lovers and friends.  I created relationships and environments.  I adorned myself with the clothing of my choices, and carried the wounds from my battles.  The rewards from my gentler creations have also become visible.
The process of creating art is also like this for me. I struggle; I love; I hate.  Mistakes are made, covered over, but always leave a history of what went before, sometimes becoming the most beautiful places. The wounds always show, making it richer and more beautiful as it evolves; like the human spirit.
My wounds are who I am. My art is a reflection of this. It is every work I do,  transforming, adding colors, adding layers…sometimes covering them up again, sometimes violently ripping them away, sometimes merely poking holes in the layers to see inside, so I know where I’ve been. It is my history of being.
My work is a contemporary statement worn by the elements.  I am interested in texture with hidden images, movement and age.  I love discarded old things, deserted, desolate places and damp basements… I love stones and cracked walls overgrown with nature… I love mysterious places where wild animals live.”
