At certain times in our lives, by circumstance or by chance, previously unknown talents within ourselves rise to the surface and are expressed in unexpected ways.Dorene Lehavi became an accomplished ballroom dancer in her 40’s after years of sitting on the sidelines, believing that she couldn’t dance. In her 60’s she discovered another unexpected and unknown gift from within – the creative talent of a collage artist.
Changes in her life have led her on a fulfilling journey of self-discovery. Different aspects and episodes of her life have come together into an integral collage that is her today. In this continuing quest for self growth, the question “what other gifts do I have yet to discover”, promises some surprising answers in an exciting future.
The words of Emma Bombeck (Humorist 1927-1996) have guided her in her life’s goals. Bombeck said: “When I stand before God at the end of life, I hope I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say: I used everything you gave me.”
Dorene is committed to finding as much of her hidden talents as she can. She believes in the notion that we all have many gifts that uniquely our own. Until we discover them, nurture them and give them expression in our everyday lives, we are living only part of the life we were meant to live.
It is a notion that has sustained her in her professional life as a business and executuive coach, teaching that business cannot be separate from life, and that we have all untapped qualities within us than we have hitherto harnessed.
An unusual aspect of her work, as collage artist, is her passion for personalized biographical works. These pieces usually begin with an interview to connect and understand the personality of the subject and gain insights into poignant moments of the person’s life. The personalized collage can be in the language of symbols, metaphors, a literal interpretation or a combination of all. Dorene likes to enliven them with touches of humor, absurdity, lightheartedness, and most importantly love.
