David A. Thomas Jr. has called Los Angeles home for over thirty years. His work has appeared in galleries, websites and literary magazines all over the world. His abstract work won top prize honors in the 2007 open call to emerging artists judged by Howard Fox, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art  (LACMA). He is a voice actor, an on-camera actor, a comedian/impressionist and has been in hundreds of commercials, television, radio and cartoon productions, such as ‘gatorade’ and ‘king of the hill’. One of his artistic on-going projects is his ‘long painting’ – a collection of 36 images from Labor Day 2003 on a single weave of linen 165 feet long. Another new project is a series of large paintings dealing with politically charged myths from religion and the promise of the American dream. David is mainly a self taught artist but has studied limited palette technique and portraiture with Joe Biel. He lives with his wife Sandra Ramirez- Thomas, their two dogs and a cat.

“I fell in love with painting as a child while watching my mother paint majestic sailing ships in the laundry room of our home. The smell of linseed oil, resin and turpentine was like incense for a sublime meditation. I always wanted to be a painter, but I never saw it as a way to make a living. I moved through construction, designed and built custom furniture and supervised the building of custom homes, then moved into films and television. I finally settled into a career in voiceover work giving me the time I so desired and needed to create art work and discover myself as a painter.
I paint to answer the hard questions for me as an artist. I am primarily self-taught. My construction experience has had a unique influence on composition, mediums, various strata and their relationship to oils and pastels. I sometimes build my own stretchers, I make my own medium and use unlikely tools like concrete trowels to apply pigment and other mediums. I spend great amounts of time studying the old masters as well as contemporary artists. I think that seeing what has been done by the best has helped imbue me with a strong desire for an original perspective on a very old craft.”
