I have been interested in painting and especially watercolor since I was a teenager. Back then I was fortunate to beinvited to participate in the activities of a summer “plein air” group at Lake George, New York. I loved it, and being part of that group gave me the enthusiasm and the desire to continue with my art. Ever since, I have always preferred to paint on location –“plein air” and California is the ideal location to do this. The light here is so special, the weather almost always ideal, and there is so much natural beauty that the opportunities are endless opportunities for artists to get out and work surrounded by scenic splendor and sun.

In the past I have taken evening classes at the Art Center School in illustration, life drawing, and in oil painting. Among my teachers I note Paul Souza and Glen Vilpu. Every artist learns from others. We look at other artists’ works and we are influenced and inspired by them. Over the years I have learned new techniques, new ways to use color and render light and, mostly, I have tried to infuse something of my personal understandings and perceptions into my work.

For some time I have been part of a group of fellow “plein air” enthusiasts. We have spent many weekends hauling our paints and easels to some chosen spot to spend the day before the canvas. Working side by side, we are able to communicate ideas, discuss our individual perspectives of the subject matter and learn from each other.

Much of the work I do is done in the San Gabriel Mountains. Throughout this region, including the Pasadena Arroyo, there are countless trails and lookouts where the natural beauty of Southern California leaves you breathless. It is along these trails and canyon roads that I look for inspiration.

In general I prefer to work with watercolors and oils. The scene, the light of the moment, the feel of the place, and my mood often determine my choice of medium.

California plein air artists are blessed in two ways. We have endless natural landscapes to paint and a natural light that incomparable.
