Born in Flint, Michigan on Dec 2, 1945, Dan Deming has been a traveling man. He grew up primarily in DC, lived for a time in Baltimore, and has lived and traveled throughout Europe, North Africa and Canada. He has also spent a lot of hours and energy driving semi trailer trucks on the highways and byways in order to pay his bills. Dan currently lives in the Southern California area where he now dedicates his energies to his art, his studio and his gallery.

Though influenced by the American Abstract Expressionists he has been fascinated with Art world-wide and the ancient cultural influences that we don't have in the short history of the U.S.A.

He is fascinated by the way artists past and present view the world around them. Though the primary role of the artist is to communicate to others through a physical act of creation, by putting paint to canvas or chisel to stone etc, Dan believes that artists and viewers have forgotten that, while they are part of the existing physical universe, they are also, in fact, contributing to its continual creation. It is a sophisticated process in which each of us manipulates the physical universe as we talk to others. Art is founded on this precept. Whatever medium, whatever direction an artist might choose, this is what is happening.

STATEMENT: Why do I paint like this any way?

“To me this is an easy question to answer. This is the way I paint. Sorry! The real answer is complex, strange and simple at the same time. I don't paint an image that represents something else like other Artists. Like some Artists of the past it's the making of my Art that is a Great part of what it is. Also where it was made and where it is placed is also very important. I have rejected all the acceptable norms.

I was on the road for a long time before I realized I needed to get my art done. I realized that if I don't do my Art it will never be. So, I would do 10 or 15 paintings then hit the road for a few years. I don't know where they all are but I run into them every once in a while. But in 1987 I broke my leg and from that time on I have painted relentlessly.

Now there are two places where I spend my time - my studio and my office. I like to mount my new paintings up on the walls and live with them. Sometimes weaknesses show up and I get the chance to correct them. It amazes me that some people only consider tortured resolution and enslavement to subject matter as the only form of valid Art. It's an old idea. I feel that after all my years I have freed myself from this and my ideas go straight from my mind to the canvas. It has taken me years of trying different mediums to find the stuff that allows me to do this.”
