My art expresses the interplay I have with my environment. Intuitive marks and gestures guide me through a process of layering, constructing, deconstructing and rebuilding- until the work dictates when it is time to stop. Obscure hints of landscape, or of a line drawing, result in compositions that help map my journey. My work is influenced by the abstract expressionists of the postwar period, in particular the art of Diebenkorn, Rauschenberg, Motherwell and Twombley. It is also influenced by the masters Matisse and Monet. I have used my painting and mixed media artwork as a means to reflect my personal observations of my ever changing world.
My art is passionate, visceral, structural, immediate, raw, spontaneous, chaotic colorful scribble, monochromatic serenity, architectural…..
Growing up in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., exposure to culture and history fostered a lifelong love of the arts. I began painting at a young age and continued exploring a variety of artistic endeavors. Now, having lived the majority of my life in Southern California, I have a great appreciation for the dynamic landscape and bohemian spirit filling the beaches, mountains and deserts surrounding me. The political and social changes of our crazy times are having a profound effect on my current work.
