Although Christina Lynn Johnson has drawn since she could hold a crayon, she never took art seriously until she was laid off from an accounting firm in the late ‘90’s.  What a happy misfortune that turned out to be since she was now free to ask the question – “what do I want to do with the rest of my life?” The answer was –something creative.  She tried painting furniture and some ‘trompe l’oeil’ classes, before finding her true love - watercolors.  The creativity bug bit hard.  Next, came a class in glass fusing, and 9 months later – the birth of a glass studio in the garage.  (She also started up her own part-time accounting business)

Christina is a native Californian, who revels in the wonders of Mother Nature.  Textures and the play of light and shadow are a favorite subject.  The soft patina of ancient stone buildings, the marbled colors of rock aged by water and weather, these are the scenes she loves to share in her paintings. “I hope to evoke in the viewer the same sense of tranquility, wonder and mystery that I feel upon discovering a scene.  Painting is like a meditation to me.”

Although her fused glass pieces are definitely influenced by her painting background, they are full of energy and color. Abstract shapes come alive through the use of strong design elements that artfully take advantage of the unique properties of glass.  “I love the contrast of my glass pieces to my watercolor paintings.  With glass I feel free to experiment and play with the vibrant opalescent and transparent colors. I think the pieces reflect the strength I’ve come to feel as an artist and evoke the playfulness and joy I feel in life.”  Christina has studied with such notable glass artists as Roger Thomas, Catherine Newell, Michael Dupille, and Robert Leatherbarrow. She conducts her own workshops in glass fusing at her studio in West Hills, CA
