Charles Indika Perera was born and grew up on the beautiful island of Sri Lanka. As a child his parents encouraged his artistic talents and his freedom of self-expression. During his early youth in the 80’s he lived through the civil war which divided Sri Lankans and began to devastate the island. Though not directly affected by the conflict he was marked by the turbulent times. Later he studied art at the Dimbulagala Arts Academy. After arriving in the USA, thanks to a Green Card Lottery, Charles pursued his art studies in Palm Springs under the late Reginald Pollack in Palm Springs and then furthered his academic education by graduating from the El Camino College with a diploma in Gallery Management.
He has been painting for more than 20 years under the name “Artro2” and through his artwork he has found an inner peace for his ‘wondering’ soul. Charles channels his negative energies onto the canvas to create positive images. It is part of his endeavor to bring about world peace and understanding of the human spirit. To better create an expression of the depth of our spirits, Charles accentuates his work with layers and undertones achieved by the use of pallet knives, paint sticks, heavy brushwork and his own fingers as tools.
Statement: “Art has been a self-healing process for me. Life is a constant struggle; not a pretty picture. But art can help you to get through that struggle. As an artist I capsulate a moment in time, through my eyes a thought trapped in my subconscious mind or a place I love. I bring tranquility to the beholder, by abstraction.”
Charles Perera’s artistic talents extend to art, poetry, songwriting, photography, movie screenwriting and acting. He has won numerous awards. He presently lives in Redondo Beach.
