Digital artist and photographer Charles (Chuck) Howard Brittenham is a California native and currently lives in Santa Monica. Since graduating from the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles he has made his mark on the Southern California art scene and has been a respected graphic designer and technology innovator in the Los Angeles art community for the past 30 years. He is best known for his ability to combine two, or more unrelated photographs into an entirely new digital image that is remarkably complex and hypnotic.
His interest in photography started early when at age 11 he set up his first darkroom and printed his first images. His fine art abilities were recognized and encouraged by his teachers throughout high school where Chuck garnered 1st place honors in all four art media groups in his senior year.
In addition to his mastery of computer software programs Chuck has also learned lithography and experiments with his own hand applied color photo emulsions on archival substrates that are contact printed using large fine-line litho negatives.
Nowadays, Chuck spends a lot of his free time creating digital art prints of flowers and nature while constantly exploring new possibilities in his darkroom.
Artist’s Statement: “It is my objective is to challenge the viewer’s senses to look beyond the editorial subject matter of the image and get visually and emotionally involved in these curiously compelling and unique digital fine art images. Each piece has a story behind it and reveals different stories through the viewer’s own individual introspection of feelings, thoughts and motivations.
Fine art photography is more than printing and displaying a photograph with museum quality materials. The term “fine art photography” is almost an oxymoron because most people associate fine art with a laborious hand applied medium, such as oil on canvas, and photography as a Kodak moment instantly preserved by a print from the one-hour photo store. The digital darkroom enables me to fuse fine art techniques with photographic imagery leading to interesting compositions of abstract expressionism. I am not talking about applying filters to a landscape photo or tracing a photo into the computer to make it look artistic. To me, that is the digital equivalent of paint-by-numbers and is just as obvious.”
