Squares, circles, straight lines - geometrical patterns in the hands of the right artist are as powerful and liberating as the expansive and seemingly more random gestures of the action painters.

In his geometric abstractions Burton Rein is continually experimenting with lines, circles, stripes, bands, squares etc. to create a pictorial language of shapes. By re-arranging the compositional parts he creates simple geometric patterns where the spatial relationships are enhanced by bold, vivid colors. With each new work Burton pushes forward, examining the infinite number of ways of placing them into non-illusionistic space –each new arrangement seems suggested by the previous one.

The geometric and mathematical perfections we find in Nature have inspired so many artists to copy them to express their view of the world. While geometric abstractions appear to be ‘intellectual’,’ ordered’, and ‘harmonious’ and appeal to our sense of order and balance, it is abundantly clear that artists like Burton are as emotionally involved with the process of making such art as those artists who choose to work without boundaries. Thus the results, as you can see here, are just as moving and engaging.
