Allan is a 4th generation native Californian who now resides in Laguna Beach California. A friend and mentor once told him that “the best ideas have not been thought of yet.” And taking those words to heart he created his own mantra which guides him through life: “Creation is all and all is creation.” At one stage of his life curiosity about religion and spirituality led him into a seven-year journey of social detachment. During this time of quest for personal and spiritual understanding he lived at a certain moment in Hawaii, in tents and caves, cut off from the world. Years of meditation and a deep interest in Mandala art led him into an obsession with geometric form. “For many years I was so obsessed with producing and pondering geometric configurations that I could think of little else, except how they might relate to the foundation of creation and life. One night, as I gazed into a star-clustered sky, I suddenly realized that my pre-suppositions about the role of geometry were short sighted and had completely overlooked its inseparable counterpart.” This personal revelation sent him on an exploration into the genre of abstraction. It is a vision that embraces a belief in the symbiotic relationship between two inextricable opposites -symmetry and asymmetry. For Brian Allan abstraction, and especially non-representational abstraction, has a never- ending, ever-increasing allure. Abstract forms are the nuts and bolts of the so called Primordial Soup, and the foundation of all possible actions and reactions. Things we consider representational, which register familiar to our minds, have their origin in some ambiguous form. “My motivation to make art comes from my insatiable need to create. I simply must do it! I strive to continually find deeper and deeper expression through my work. When people respond positively to my art, I somehow feel that they are responding to the real me; or at least something closer to my essence. And, if it evokes a negative response it can often foster inner strength as well as outward growth. My best ideas are almost always born in the midst of mistakes and failure.” The black circle, which figures on each of his works, has become Allan’s unique signature. It symbolizes for him “the endless cycle of order and disorder. Pure, non-objective abstraction resides in the realm of the infinite... It does not concern itself with the finite objects most familiar to the dominant left brain.” Brian Allan has sold hundreds of paintings to private and corporate collections worldwide. His work is shown in well established galleries in major art markets throughout the United States. He is also represented by a number of consultants and private dealers in the United States and Asia. ***** Much of his artwork is available in giclee prints. * None of the artworks may be copied or reproduced without the written permission of the Artist
