About the Artist:
Bjlane found her artistic passion at a young age. By the time she was in high school, she knew that art would be her life. In 1974, while majoring in fine arts at Yavapai College in Prescott Arizona, she first began exhibiting her work at local galleries. In 1976, at the tender age of 19, she was offered her first one-woman show. Moving to California in the late 70’s, she continued her education through community colleges and art workshops and began offering workshops of her own. In the early 1980’s Bjlane became actively involved in community art projects, and dedicated herself to enhancing children’s art programs in her local schools. Now, more than three decades later, she continues to dedicate herself to her life's passion as she captures her life by sculpting, drawing and painting in her unique, fresh and lively impressionistic style.
The Artwork:
Bjlane is a "community" artist. In her work, she attempts to capture her environment--the intricacy of living a metropolitan lifestyle with its changing history, intermixed with modern technology and structure. Her portraits capture the essence of her subjects with a contemporary approach. Her sculptures capture the essence of the subject’s personality. In her cityscapes there are suggestions of our modern world, as she incorporates power poles, light signals and commonplace elements. Bjlane’s “plein air” work has captured many places both here in the United States, and in Europe, including Germany, France and Amsterdam. In all her art--whether cityscapes, portraits, sculptures or figurative works--there is a sense of underlying structure, utilizing traditional design techniques, color composition and balance in each piece.
Bjlane is a multi disciplinary artist, working in several media. In addition to traditional painting and sculpting media (watercolor, pastel, acrylic, oil and clay), she has recently been fascinated and rejuvenated with the application, color, texture, freedom and uniqueness of Oil Bars/Oil Sticks (oil paint, in solid stick form). Much of her plein air work incorporates the use of oil bars and has a unique brilliance, with the "impasto" (texture build-up) style application and "Full Chroma" (pure color) reminiscent of some early European impressionistic masters.
Artist Statement:
“As humans, we are born into this world with the curiosity and desire to understand the world around us. Through play and interaction, our senses help us learn quickly about our world. Typically within the first year, we pick up our native language and become familiar with people, places and things. We learn what, and who we love. We play and learn and grow. Through the process of growth, schooling and society, many of us forget….we forget how to question, forget how to observe, forget how to play. Some among us are lucky. We are those who are named “artists”, and like myself, some of us have never let go of those primitive qualities. Throughout our lives, we keep the joy of curiosity and find inspiration in everything around us. I question everything. I observe line, light, shape and movement. I love color, design and perspective. It doesn’t matter if it is a freeway, a face or a historical piece of architecture…I love the discovery. There will never be enough time to capture all that I see around me, but in my paintings, I paint from my heart. I play, I grow and I continue to learn more and more about this wonderful world and its people, and I am always thankful for another day to create and share the joy of art!
