Arthur Kraft is an Abstract Realist painter who uses vibrant colors and bold shapes to express strong moods. In 2000 he left a position as the News Director of a Southern California, National Public Radio station, to devote his energies full time to painting. Those years of practical professional experience observing and reporting on the world have combined with three decades artistic struggle, to produce his body of artwork.
Building on his past role as social observer which evolved during his career as an award winning broadcast journalist, Art has honed his skills as an artist to create insightful and emotionally moving images which peek inside us all. A place Kraft says we rarely wish to look.
“We seem to have this pathological fear of looking inward. I expect my paintings to provide some meaning, some evidence of what’s going on in our world right now. I see people struggling to find meaning in their lives and settling for meaningless intercourse and empty ‘successes.’ I want to paint the things that move us, the things we long for. If a painting says ‘look at me, I have something to do with you’ - that’s a success.”
He soon concluded that painting is, in reality, a form of writing. The forms and colors on the canvas are not just reflections, but ideas. They are things that are really there, but just out of sight; fear, longing, attachment, our cultural isolation, our quest for love.
In 2008 he received a California grant to paint and exhibit at the Paris American Academy. In 2008, his work was selected by Howard Fox, Curator of Contemporary Art at L.A.C.M.A. for Tarfest. In the L.A. Juried Open 2011 his work was selected for 2nd Place by Craig Krull, Krull Galleries L.A.
Art currently lives in Thousand Oaks, just north of L.A.
